Cromore Croft

This project involves the retrofit and extension of a traditional croft house on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland. Long abandoned and in poor condition, the original structure faced the same risk of loss as many historic crofts across the region. The clients, passionate about local heritage and concerned about the disappearance of similar buildings, were determined to retain the existing house and preserve its presence in the landscape.

The design approach respects the simplicity and character of the original croft while introducing a carefully scaled extension suited to contemporary living. Work focuses on stabilizing the historic structure, improving its performance and ensuring its long‑term viability, all while maintaining the quiet, understated identity that defines Hebridean architecture. The result is a home that honors its history, fits naturally within its coastal setting and supports everyday use with straightforward, well‑considered solutions.
